History of the Maricopa Veterans Center:

In 1982, long-time Maricopa residents Dallas and Mary Lou Smith donated land and an old  Air Force HQ Building which was moved from the defunct Williams Air Force Base, to be used as a library in the small town of Maricopa.  Operated mainly as a volunteer site, the library was Maricopa’s only public building for many years.  In 2003, when Maricopa became an incorporated city, dreams of a more permanent library facility began.  Those dreams came true in 2009, when the Maricopa Public Library opened.

Once the new library building was open, the city was left with the unused “Old Library”.  After asking the community for ideas, the city undertook a process to find a tenant and operator of the facility who would agree to provide much needed meeting space, at a reasonable cost, for local organizations.  In October 2009 the Maricopa Veteran’s Center (MVC) became a reality as the City Council voted to lease the facility to the Maricopa VFW Post 12043 and American Legion Post 133. The “Maricopa Veterans Center” is administered and maintained by a committee of volunteers from the American Legion and VFW Posts.
